GTIA Board Minutes

Minutes of the Green Trails Improvement Association
Board of Directors Meeting
Tuesday May 13, 2003

Meeting was called to order by Vice President, Joan Dudas at 7:30 p.m., prior to the arrival of President, Peter Bakas.  Board members present: Peter Bakas, Diana Cygan, Joan Dudas, Tim Dudas, Lloyd Hendrickson, Les Lavin, Betty Long, Joe Masek, Tom Maslanka, Jonni Miklos-Finch, Jeff Quasney.    Board members excused: Linda Gilbert, Marge Hough, Gerry Jackson, Dawn Soukup.     Paula Gleason was Recording Secretary.  A quorum was present.

Open Forum
A concerned resident presented his findings regarding pressure treated wood in some of the GTIA and Park District park tables and benches that contain small amounts of arsenic.  Several articles of research were distributed to the Board for review, which included advice not to pressure wash or use bleach and/or acid on this material.  The resident is most concerned about getting the word out to families and children.  The Board suggested he might submit an article to the Pathfinder, and also attend the next Park District Board meeting to obtain information on what other options the Park District has discussed.  The EPA has advised that wood treated with this formula will no longer be available after 12/03.  As related by Joanne Broda, according to Dan Garvey of Lisle Park District, the EPA did not feel there is any real health threat when this wood is used in benches and play equipment, but should not be used in food preparation areas.

Minutes of the Prior Meeting:
Minutes of the prior meeting were reviewed.

Management reported an update on the relief sewer project, which includes some large manholes to service the sewer.  The Village is trying to improve the aesthetics of the area and may possibly add some shrubbery.  It was suggested that the Maintenance Committee inspect and review the entire area, working with the Village and the contractor, and submit recommendations to the Board.

Regarding a light pole that is now 45 feet from the trail at Sleepy Hollow & Golfview, Ron Burnett suggested going east and moving the light across the trail, at an estimated cost of $650.  It was suggested that the Maintenance Committee review this again.

Peter and Tom reported on their meeting with the HF homeowners regarding the trail encroachment.  The parties agreed on steps to be taken to minimize the encroachment and other considerations.

Board Motion: Jonni Miklos-Finch moved to request legal counsel to draw up a legal document to memorialize the agreement reached including the entering into an easement agreement, Joe Masek seconded.  The motion was passed by unanimous voice vote.

Board Motion: Tom Maslanka further motioned to move the bushes and the tree in question in this area as soon as possible, Diana Cygan seconded.  The motion was passed by unanimous voice vote.

Board Motion: Betty Long moved to approve the planting application, pending final approval by the Maintenance Committee, Diana Cygan seconded.  The motion was passed by unanimous voice vote.

Some trail replacement areas from last year are in need of additional seeding to prevent erosion.  Greg Moore has been requested to seed several areas and inspect a Woodglen drainage problem.
