The 744 acres of Green Trails encompasses residential neighborhoods, two commercial shopping centers, parks, landscaped common areas, a fire station, a school, and the infrastructure to support it all. The varied terrain includes nine lakes, mature woods, grassy open spaces, hills, and flat land. There are twenty-five miles of trails for hiking, jogging, or biking. Seventeen public parks offer facilities such as playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts, and ball fields.

Common areas wind throughout Green Trails behind the homes. Paths through these open spaces foster neighborhood social interaction to reach beyond back yards. The extensive pathway system links all neighborhoods.

Housing
The Green Trails community is comprised of 1,675 single-family homes, 396 condos, and 440 apartments (including adjacent affiliated areas such as Collegewood Court). The development of the community began in the mid-1970s and was completed in the late 1990s.

To reflect the different ecosystems and to appeal to people of assorted age and economic levels, there is a diversity of housing in the community. Many different builders lent their distinctive styles to the homes in Green Trails. Units range in size from apartments and condos, through compact patio homes and duplexes, homes with standard or custom features, to custom estates on acre lots.
